Killing Us Softly 3
In Partnership with the UTM Women’s Centre

Jean Kilbourne continues her groundbreaking analysis of advertising’s depiction of women in this most recent update of her pioneering Killing Us Softly series. In fascinating detail, Kilbourne decodes an array of print and television advertisements to reveal a pattern of disturbing and destructive gender stereotypes. Her analysis challenges us to consider the relationship between advertising and broader issues of culture, identity, sexism, and gender violence.

Questions addressed are: Does the beauty ideal still tyrannize women?
| Does advertising still objectify women’s bodies? | Are the twin
themes of liberation and weight control still linked? | Is sexuality still presented as women’s main concern? | Are young girls still sexualized? | Are grown women infantilized? | Are images of male violence against women still used to sell products?

We look forward to viewing the video and then having an informal discussion on the information presented..

As an executive member, you would be responsible for planning, organizing, and promoting freethought events around campus, and being actively involved in the freethought movement. All it takes is a few hours per month (including meetings)!

U.K. Follows France - ‘X-Files’ to be made public

The Ministry of Defence plans to open its “X-Files” on UFO sightings to the public for the first time. Officials have not yet decided on a date for the release of the reports, which date back to 1967, but it is hoped to be within weeks.The move follows the decision by the French national space agency to release its UFO files in March, the first official body in the world to do so.

Or so says the Creation Museum.

A new museum in Petersburg, Kentucky greets visitors with a 20ft tall tumbling waterfall and at its base, mannequins of frolicking children play amongst dinosaurs. The Creation Museum, which cost $25 million to build, is home to many unusual sites: a diorama of ancient people overshadowed by a towering T. rex, Adam and Eve swimming in a river with giant reptiles, and even a scale model of Noah’s Ark.

Green nanotechnology is easy, says study

PORTLAND, Ore. — A new study details how nanomaterials can be created that are not only safe, but also cost less and perform better than conventional materials. “Green Nanotechnology: It’s Easier Than You Think,” was written by the Washington D.C. think tank, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. The new study, which is free online, is based on a series of dialogues with scientists, policymakers and industry representatives about green nanotechnology.

Investigator finds reasonable grounds for claim of atheism firing

LEWISTON, Maine –An investigator for the Maine Human Rights Commission has found reasonable grounds for a manager’s claim that he was fired from his job at DeCoster farms because he’s an atheist.

Cacy Cantwell says Austin “Jack” DeCoster told him before he was fired that they might have to “part ways” because Cantwell didn’t believe in God.

Stark’s atheist views break political taboo

Rep. Pete Stark of Fremont might have crossed what some are calling “one of the last frontiers” in politics when he delighted atheists this week by acknowledging that he does not believe in a supreme being.

Just a generation ago, says Democratic political strategist Dan Newman, “you couldn’t go anywhere near” such a statement, which “would have been political suicide.”

Renowned Cosmologist Draws Sold-Out Crowd

Last night, nearly 3,000 people received a mini lesson on the origin of the universe from perhaps the world’s most famous cosmologist, Stephen Hawking.

Hawking spoke to a packed audience in Zellerbach Hall about how Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity and quantum theory explained the creation of the universe.

The event was also simultaneously broadcast to a sold-out Wheeler Auditorium, as well as Webcast live.
